Centre for Victims of Injustice Applauds Ghana Parliament for Abolishing Death Penalty

The Centre for Victims of Injustice, Ghana (CenVI, GH), a non-government organization, has commended the Parliament of Ghana for amending the Criminal Act 1960, Act 29, and the Armed Forces Act 1962, Act 105, which pertained to the death penalty. Mr. Felix Engsalige Nyaaba, the Founder and Executive Director of Cenvi, GH, expressed pride and progress for the nation, stating that the decision reflects justice, compassion, and respect for human dignity, positioning Ghana as a leading country in evolving its legal systems to align with contemporary values and standards.

In a historic decision on July 25, 2023, Ghana’s parliament passed the Criminal Amendment Bill, repealing the death penalty and replacing it with life imprisonment. The legislative amendment signifies a commitment to uphold the intrinsic value of human life and recognize rehabilitation as a cornerstone of the justice system. CenVI, GH, extended heartfelt commendation to the Members of Parliament for passing the amendment, aligning Ghana with a growing global consensus on the drawbacks and potential injustices associated with capital punishment.

Mr. Nyaaba emphasized that the decision serves as an inspiration to other nations and reflects Ghana’s dedication to human rights and fair administration of justice. He also commended Speaker Mr. Alban Bagbin, MP for Madina Mr. Francis Xavier Sosu, and the entire House for engaging in open discussions and considering different perspectives before reaching this landmark decision, showcasing Ghana’s democratic maturity and commitment to citizen needs and aspirations.
